March 2014 Issue
In early December, I received a message from an old friend who told me about the daughter of one of her friends. The daughter is an amputee and had written in her letter to Santa that all she wanted for Christmas was to meet other kids who were like her. The story pulled at my heartstrings, and I reached out immediately to the O&P community for help. Within days of posting a message to OANDP-L, I had received dozens of offers to help, which I happily forwarded to the girl's mother.
I was awed when one of my dear friends called and asked if the child and one of her parents could leave in three weeks for camp. He offered to sponsor her entire trip! I immediately contacted the family, and they were overjoyed. Arrangements were made, and within a month of my posting, the family arrived in Orlando, Florida, where this sweet little girl made many friends just like her. She also met Winter the dolphin, rode a bike, climbed a rope, and danced in a talent show. You can read about her experience in the Industry Review news article "Secret Santa" Makes a Young Girl's Wish Come True.
It's stories like this that make me thrilled to introduce the first product from our newly established sister publishing company, Amplitude Media Group. There are countless individuals with limb loss who are looking for information so that they, too, can meet others like them, but it can be overwhelming and difficult to wade through all of the various organizations and associations. The 2014 Limb Loss Resource Guide, which we are debuting at the American Academy of Orthotists and Prosthetists (the Academy) Annual Meeting & Scientific Symposium, is an independent, one-stop resource for all things related to successfully preparing for, adapting to, and living with limb loss. Its online companion, www.amplitude-media.com, will be developed over the next several months with even more information, news, and resources.
I wasn't able to respond to every message and offer of help for the little girl whose story reached me, but know that your messages were received, and your compassion and willingness to give to those in need is truly appreciated. Every day, the O&P profession inspires my staff and me to provide the information, tools, and resources you need to help you do your jobs better. In fact, I encourage you to check out our newest EDGE Custom Publications product, Flash Pubs, which promises to make it even easier and more affordable for you to market your facilities to your referral sources and payers. Visit our booth and ask to talk to Doug Chartier, who will be giving two marketing presentations during the Academy meeting, to learn more.
Thank you for your support and your continued readership of The O&P EDGE.
