More than 160 practitioners from 24 states attended the16th Annual PrimeFare East Regional Scientific Symposium at the Nashville Convention Center, Tennessee, on June 13-14. Sixty-four total hours of continuing education units were offered, organized into five tracks: prosthetics, orthotics, pedorthics, mastectomy, and administrative/management.

"Our [attendee] surveys indicated that the education was very well received, informative, and up to date," said Cathie Pruitt, president of PrimeCare Orthotics & Prosthetics Network, Germantown, Tennessee. She added that the administrative/management track courses rated especially well among attendees, particularly the payer roundtable discussion, which included speakers from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services and O&P Billing Solutions, Murfreesboro, Tennessee. The roundtable discussion shared best practices for managing claims and receiving reimbursement from payers such as Medicare and workers' compensation.

The prosthetics track offered a variety of topics in both lower- and upper-limb prosthetics. In the session, "Evolutionary Advancements in Modular Socket Interface Designs," Jay Martin, CP, FAAOP, discussed the need for more advanced upper-limb socket interfaces to support the increasing load-bearing potential of advanced upper-limb prostheses, and introduced a socket interface designed to do just that. The orthotics track offered sessions on AFOs, stance control KAFOs, functional gait biomechanics, and a workshop on orthotic materials. And the pedorthics track offered sessions on foot orthotic casting techniques, partial foot prostheses, and foot orthotic materials. In "Special Foot Orthoses for Special Situations," Erick Janisse, CPed, CO, showed examples of outside-the-box solutions for foot pathologies such as Jones fractures, tarsal tunnel syndrome, and turf toe. Nikki Giamarino, CFm, presented the all-day Advanced Training Class in the mastectomy track, addressing topics such as breast pathophysiology, lymphedema, and difficult-to-fit mastectomy cases.

PrimeCare announced plans to add a third symposium to its annual events next year: PrimeFare Central 2015 will be held in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; dates have not yet been determined.

PrimeFare East 2015 will return to Nashville next June; dates have not yet been determined.
