Thank you for your question and continued interest in ROMP’s work! To
clarify for everyone, ROMP does not charge patients for donated components.
On the contrary, we utilize these free and donated components in order to
provide a prosthesis for relatively little cost.
We all know prosthetic services go beyond the components provided, and
include valuable care such as fabrication, fitting, and follow-up services.
Our cost per prosthesis represents that value. As a nonprofit corporation,
we cannot make any profit off our services. We charge an accessible fee for
our work in order to be sustainable and ensure that our patients are
invested in their healthcare.
ROMP is able to provide prosthetic care to our patients in Guatemala,
Ecuador, and the United States for an average cost of $1,500 per
prosthesis. These individuals have no other means to obtain a prosthesis,
due to a variety of factors including immigration status, extreme financial
hardship, or lack of public health infrastructure. This cost is mostly
covered by ROMP’s donors, made up of incredible individuals, foundations,
and businesses in our community who believe in the power of mobility. Our
Components for a Cause (C4C) component recycling program, which is
what our national
collection drive
supporting this spring, is what allows us to keep these costs so low and
provide high quality care to individuals who need and deserve it.
ROMP is working with the most marginalized individuals in the Americas who
would otherwise not have access to care, and we are proud to share that we
just surpassed our 4,000th device delivered. We believe mobility is a human
right, and we are dedicated to breaking down economic and systemic barriers
that keep individuals from obtaining this level of freedom.
