Preparatory prosthesis

Hi,
I was wondering if anybody could give me some more insight into when and why they do a preparatory prosthesis? What length of time between billing a preparatory and definitive prosthesis? What materials are used? Or if you could point me in the right direction on where to find more detailed information?
