DIABETIC SHOES-LCD, DEFINTION OF CLINICAL NURSE SPECIALIST

Jessica Longoria

Does Medicare allow an MD who manages the patient’s diabetic condition to
sign off on foot exam preformed by an LVN?

The Medicare LCD reads…

“in-person visit with a podiatrist, other M.D or D.O., physician assistant,
nurse practitioner, or *clinical nurse specialist *that is within 6 months
prior to delivery of the shoes/inserts, and that documents one of more of
criteria a – f”.

I am having a hard time determining what Medicare considers a “clinical
nurse specialist”. And we all know calling to ask them is worthless.

I have a foot exam from an LVN and I am unsure if I am able to send it to
the MD or not.

Feedback?

Thanks for any help!
