I have a query that has annoyed me for a while and I thought I would throw it out there to see how others cope with this situation and to see if I’m missing something easy!
I’ve also added a secondary related question whilst I have you on this topic!
1. I’d love to know peoples “go to” paediatric knee joint and why.
In my experience kids will go through knees, some fast some slow. But there is always the issue of no swing phase control and considerable terminal impact.
The kids that go through knees fast are the classic examples of this, that within weeks can have a knee clapped out and sounding like a gunshot on every step.
I have a kid in mind that has prompted this query who has been through a Seattle Child’s Play knee and 2 Total Knee 1100’s in the last year.
I do know there is the small single axis Bock Hydraulic Knee (3R65?) with swing phase control (only paed knee I know of with this) but the single axis aspect of this knee makes me nervous as well as the Bock price tag if I’m right about the stability concern.
So, would be interested in people’s thoughts, ideas, experiences etc.
2. Second query is the age that an active knee joint is considered/utilised in the paediatric population.
I was taught the traditional approach that a child needed to be old enough “to be taught” how to use a knee, but the longer I’ve been fitting kids, the more I realise that the little ones learn by trial and error more than anything we tell them. So, in recent years, I’ve gone as low as 3 with an active knee, but know have a little 9 month old fella that we’ve fitted with an extension prosthesis after his knee disartic amputation who was up and toddling within a week of being fitted. He’s clearly going to be a very capable young man and it got me thinking at what age could an active knee be introduced.
Once again, interested in people’s thoughts, ideas, experiences etc.
