Water socks

Richard Krosin

Hello everyone!
I have an 8 year-old female patient with low level spina bifida that currently uses solid ankle AFOs. During the summer she and her family often go to the beach. While swimming she wears her AFOs and her mother is ademant that she would like her to continue using the AFOs while swimming. The problem is that sand gets into both the AFO and her water shoes, causing skin irritation. The mother commented that the family has attempted different solutions to the problem without any success–even going so far as to wrap plastic wrap around the legs and orthoses. Can anyone think of a better solution to this problem? Are there any long neoprene-like socks that might work? I’ve also thought about water-proof bladders amputees use when showering with their prosthetic limbs. Please be aware that she has an allergy to latex, so any product used must not contain this material. Thanks in advance for any advice or suggestions.
Sincerely,
Richard Krosin, CPO
