Responses: Shrinker options for Transmetatarsal Amputation

Paul Rieth

Thank you to those who responded. Inquiry followed by responses:

Inquiry: Looking for other options for a shrinker for a trans-met
amputation, other than compresso-grip or Ace bandage.

Responses:
Check with Knit Rite, they will custom fab to your specs

I have used open toe below knee compression garments (20-30 mmHg) and
sewn the garment closed at the level of amputation.

I have always used the Compresso Grip type compression socks
successfully as a tube type sock. I just sew the end to contour the
distal amputation site and normally use two layers of compression
staggered at the proximal sock ends approximately 1″ from each other.
You can generally get two socks out of one 3″ or 4″x24″ standard
Compresso Grip Sock….

You will have to get a custom shimmer made from one of the popular
compression hose companies.
Also Call knit rite about their custom measurement shrinkers

I have successfully used Jobst for men compression stockings 30-40mmHg
sewn to the length of the patient’s residual foot.

A great alternative is what I call a post-op oedema compression
interface, or, post-amputation compression interface, or,
amputation/residual-limb oedema control. I use the Alps Easy Liner – w/
or w/o cloth depending on how much compression the person can withstand;
immediate post-op w/o cloth as the elastic properties are great; later
as surgical wound matures and is less sensitive, utilize one w/ cloth
and smaller and it controls oedema and reduces pain.

You could try using a compression hose which come in different
compression levels, from 15-20mm HG up to 40-50mm HG. You could use
Medi USA or Jobst or any compression hose. You may have to stitch the
end to conform to the amputation.

Juzo makes symes shrinkers so you might want to check with them for
transmet shrinkers.
I have used a Juzo bk Shrinker… 3512 – CFL – XXS – SB….
They are 15″ long and have a silicone border on top to cling to the
skin to prevent slipping.
2 different levels of compression… 3511=0-30mmHg is too loose in my
opinion.
3512 =0-40 mmHg… ……… SB means Silicone Border.. necessary to
prevent shrinker slipping down calf…
I order them from Cascade page 356 or other distributor…
