Rusty component answers

Jeff Ropp CP

Hello List Serve Members,

My original question was what to do about rusty components from salt water and my first thought and what I have used before were stainless steel bolts, but with bimetallic galvanic corrosion, I thought there might be better solutions and you have helped out with suggestions. Here they are.

Thank you for those that have given me their suggestions too, we all appreciate them. Happy New Years too!

I live and work in Myrtle Beach. The best product I’ve found is Corrosion BLOCK. Check it out at the following link

there is a latex dip (home depot, lowes, etc.)that can be used to coat components. its the same latex dip used to add grip to hand tools. i am sorry i can’t recall the name brand.

I replace the carbon steel bolts/screws with stainless steel bolts/screws. I
bought a box of metric and SAE bolts/screws from a local bolt/screw supplier.
For those who play in the sand/surf, I also wrap electrical tape over the
exposed screws/bolts to help keep the sand/salt out. It’s inexpensive and easy
to remove and/or replace, as needed. You can also apply some wax over the
exposed bolts/screws after they are installed.

Trulife has a stainless steel screw coated with Dacromat (sp). It works
well, but over time will still show signs salt damage. Best we have found so
far.

Replace them with Stainless Steel! Available from Fastenal or some other similiar supplier. Hope this helps!

How about the possibility of doing an endoflex.

replace black machine screws with galvanized ones
