Hey Kris, I thought I would look for this. Hope it helps. Hope all is well with. Things are great at the Honky Tonk.
Kris – I am not familiar with this particular brace, but in my
experience,
insurance won’t cover a brace unless it corrects or improves a medical
condition. It is not for protection of sports injuries. Additionally,
I
once ordered a pair of custom wrist orthoses for a motocross enthusiast
which had been marketed to them in a magazine. I don’t remember the
manufacturer, but they assured me that I could get reimbursement that
would
cover the cost. Long story short, the insurance company didn’t feel
the
high cost of these custom items justified, and they paid only the cost
for
off the shelf wrist splints. I would advise you to get payment up
front and
make no guarantees – it is THEIR insurance, after all.
I re-read you e-mail and see that your not trying find the brace but
trying
to get it paid for. I would say the insurance is going to say no, if
you
need it for motocross. Just like they will pay for a knee brace if
needed
for daily use, but will not pay to allow you to return to football
which
raises your risk of injury. This guy pays thousands for bikes hundreds
for
gear and helmets he needs to fork over the money himself for his
protective
gear.
Might try contacting the American Motorcycle Association which is the sanctioning body for motorcycle racing.
You’ve answered your own question about the insurance coverage. Look at your second sentence; “he doesn’t have a condition for the neck brace……” Where does it stop with patients? Everybody wants the insurance company to pay for everything! I too want the insurance company to buy me a new car to prevent me from having an accident because my old car needs brakes, shocks and a tune-up. In its current condition it could cause me to get hurt. Where does it stop? After he finds out that the insurance won’t cover it, he damn well won’t need it nearly as much. BTW, I haven’t seen an ICD-9 code for a condition that doesn’t exist yet. When will we learn to not take part in these charades for the sake of money
Found “brace” at http://www.roughhousecycle.com/Leatt_Brace_s/641.htm?gclid=COLd34-2s5ECFQaHHgodGhqiOg, looks like a private pay item, not reimbursable by any L Code I’m aware of.
It is not a covered item, it is a sports preventitive device. I would not try to bill it for risk of failing an audit. Tell him to order it through the motorcycle magazine or buy it at any motorcycle dealership. I see them on the wall at all motorcycle dealerships or parts suppliers.
