Albino Sandoval, a quiet man with a perpetual smile, now has a new left
lower leg. He can now work again as a cook in a local restaurant and provide
for his family. Rosa Segura-Gonzalez, hopped into the clinic using a walker
to brace her arms, but can now tend to her family and walk with her young
grandchildren. Jesus Amador-Benevides and Sylvia Romero-Leopoldo also were
fitted with new lower limbs and all four share the new oppurtunity of
independent living with dignity.
The biggest smiles of the event were shared around an 8 year-old boy named
Christian Valdemar, who was born with an absent left femur, resulting in a
severe deformity that has the appearance of an amputee at about the level of
his knee. He was evaluated by Herb Barrack and will be scheduled for
fabrication and fitting of a prosthesis in the December clinic, allowing him
to play actively with his friends in his third-grade class.
With the generous financial and organizational support to the Barr
Foundation and the dedicated, talented team of volunteer prosthetists, the
future and people like young Christian Valdemar is indeed bright.
