Surfing Prosthesis

Kevin Dowling

Dear All

I have recently seen a young man in clinic who is learning to surf. He has a right side congenital absence with a short residual limb (proximal 3rd). He needs a device which will allow him to paddle rapidly and then when he is up to speed to press down through the device to gain support whilst moving to a standing position on the board.

This case is unique to us and I wonder if anyone has any knowledge or experience of appropriate terminal devices or a design for a bespoke appliance which has proved itself in use. Any suggestions or information would be gratefully received.

Thanks and Regards
