Short transhumeral prosthetic utilization

Charles Crane MD

Looking for general experience with long term utilization of functional type prosthesis in young adult amputees with very short (4 inches) transhumeral amputations. Specific case is 20 year old female, s/p traumatic amputation of dominant arm. My rehab experience is that very few amputees of this type actually continue to use a functional type prosthesis or myoelectric arm, preferring to use no prosthesis or periodic use of a cosmetic arm. Have found little documentation of actual utilization in the literature, probably due to limited numbers of cases. Any experience or help?
