Stance KAFO’s

Brian Moore

I have a young, active adult in need of bilateral KAFOs for quad weakness
resulting from a MVA about eight years prior. The patient has not worn braces
before and now has come to a point in his life where bracing could help him regain
mobilty and safety.I could acheive the desired results from combining
conventional knee joints and laminated sections. My questions is,with the new
technology of the stance knee joints(Becker,Horton,Basko,etc..), are there any system
that seems to have better success with patient compliance and functional
ability.I have not attended any of the courses for these components because of these
concerns. Are these really a technology that is being embraced or is it just
the latest fad to stream through? This patient would definetly benefit from a
system that can give all the options that these components claim to have but,are
they durable enough? Most insurances will not pay for a brace or the repairs
to a brace everytime it breaks. Now that ever brace has to last for five
years, can a stance KAFO do it?Is the reinbursement for this a problem or are we just
stuck with drop locks and bails?Conventional components have be proven to last
years and repairs can be minimal(if built correctly). Can anyone shed some
light on this subject?I will not post any responses so feel free to unload. Thanks
in advance.
