U.S.A. Joint Commission

My wife is a PT in a hospital where Joint Commission is evaluating the

facility. Her progress notes and evaluations were placed under the

microscope. Lord are we in trouble. The examiner told her to stop

using certain words to describe a patient’s condition. One word in

particular was edema. The reason was that Medicare treatment decision

makers don’t know what the word means. Use “swelling” he said. Hummm.

Now you know what you all suspected. Surprise, surprise.
