OWW Partners with Children of the Americas

October 2004 marked the beginning of new lives for over a dozen residents of Guatemala thanks to the generosity of Children of the Americas volunteer Wayne Cottle, CP, BOCP, RTP and Ohio Willow Wood (OWW), Mt. Sterling, Ohio.

During a four-day trip to Guatemala in Central America, Cottle fabricated and delivered prostheses to 14 amputee patients who otherwise would have been considered crippled and therefore unaccepted by Guatemalan society. The patients varied in background from farmers and general laborers to children. The prostheses, obtained through the not-for profit charity and a donation from OWW, allowed the adult patients to rejoin the work force and support their families. The new prostheses also allowed the pediatric amputees the opportunity to be active just like able-bodied children. During this trip, Cottle also took measurements and casts for 14 new amputees who will receive their prostheses during his return trip in January 2005.

"It is the generosity of companies like Ohio Willow Wood that allow me to further the work of Children of the Americas," stated Cottle. "My employers at the Center for Orthotic & Prosthetic Care at Shriners Hospital for Children graciously allow me the time to do this charity work. I know there is need in many places and I will continue to help as long as possible."

Cottle serves as the director of prosthetics at the Center for Orthotic & Prosthetic Care at the Shriners Hospital for Children in Lexington, Kentucky. He has made roughly seven trips over the past three years as a representative of Children of the Americas. This was the first time Cottle had approached and partnered with OWW for product donations. The company donated SACH and single-axis feet to the charity for Cottle to take with him on his October mission trip.

"Part of Ohio Willow Wood's mission is to provide the prosthetic and orthotic community products that allow amputees to lead functionally normal lifestyles," shared Mark Ford, director of marketing for OWW. "We were pleased to be able to help Wayne and Children of the Americas in this endeavor."

Children of the Americas is a non-profit charitable corporation based in Lexington, Kentucky. The organization has helped over 2,500 children and families abroad in obtaining medical treatment and supplies. In addition, the group has brought more than 300 Guatemalan children to the US for medical treatment they could not typically receive in their home country. Children of the Americas is a nationwide network of volunteers who provide free medical and surgical care and treatment.
