Scoliosis Houdini

Warren Mays

Hello All,

We have a patient who wears a nighttime scoliosis orthosis. There are
compliance issues. The patient, knowingly or unknowingly, loosens her straps
over the course of the night. She often removes the brace entirely. We have
tried overlapping strapping systems, burned holes in the straps so the
parents could install zip ties to the chafes and “lock” her into the brace
(she used nail clippers to cut the zip ties) and, most recently, duct tape
wrapped over the straps and several times around the brace. She has defeated
all tried strategies at this point.

Any ideas?

Please forego any comments about how barbaric our efforts are. The parents
are trying to save their child from needing surgery. It is their choice to
go this route, and while I might treat my own child differently than the
path they have chosen, I am not standing in judgment of them.

Thank you in advance for any constructive ideas you might have.
