I wrote CMS to ask about their definition of “expertise” relating to the new
split codes. My question to them was that obviously COs and LOs would
qualify, but what about customizing prefabricated devices – can anyone claim
to have “expertise” or will billing those codes be only in the domain of COs
or LOs, or is an ABC or BOC certified fitter deemed to be qualified as
having the expertise to bill the “expertise” codes.
Their answer: “We had posted an article to address this issue however it was
rescinded so as of now we are awaiting additional clarification from the
DMDs and CMS. A new article will be posted when clarification is received.”
