TLSO for patient with COPD

Dan Kopolow, CO, C.Ped

Good morning list,

I have been asked to fit a TLSO on a gentleman with compression fractures of the 5th, 7- 9, and 11th thoracic vertabrae. The fractures are likely related to osteoporosis. The problem is he has severe COPD. He cannot tolerate any pressure around his abdomen–pants are unbuttoned and unzipped all of the time, hates seat belts, and doesn’t like to eat because the feeling of being full makes his breathing more labored. My original thought was the Orthomerica Lombar or ECO, but he won’t tolerate the belt around the abdomen.

Has anyone had any success getting a TLSO on a patient with such severe COPD?

Thank you in advance for your suggestions and have a great weekend!
