BOC Seeks Video Practical Exam Reviewers

The Board for Orthotist/Prosthetist Certification (BOC) is recruiting Video Practical Examination (VPE) examiners, BOC announced July 27. Interested persons must respond by August 25.

"For many years both the Orthotist and Prosthetist certification have required passing a three-part examination: multiple choice, clinical simulation, and VPE," noted Trisha Tatam, director of communications. "Effective sometime in the near future, every new COF [certified orthotic fitter] candidate must also pass a VPE," she said. "Coupled with the fact that we are growing rapidly, we need more VPE examiners in all disciplines."

Tatam continued, "As a certified practitioner, you have personally established your awareness of the importance of certification as a demonstration of your competency to serve the public. As a VPE examiner, you have an opportunity to gauge whether practitioners can perform at a level sufficient to protect the public.

"This is what you can expect," she explained:

"In order to receive the VPEs electronically for your evaluation, you will need high-speed Internet access. You will be instructed how to view the VPEs for review. If you do not have this technology, you will not be able to participate as an examiner until you upgrade your equipment.

"As an incentive, you may earn either one continuing professional education (CPE) credit or $25 per first-review VPE-the choice is yours.

"You may designate the number of VPEs per month you are willing to review. We have a good tracking system so that you will not be overwhelmed.

"A two-week turn around is expected for each VPE examined. Prompt review of VPEs is essential to avoid delays in informing the candidates of success or failure. Delayed reviewed VPEs during busy times or vacations cause a great deal of stress to our candidates.

"We can predict that on deadline, 120 business days following the written exam dates, the majority of VPEs are submitted for review.

"Confidentiality is of utmost importance; i.e., neither the candidates' nor their patients' information is to be shared with anyone without a 'need to know.'

"Finally, you will have the satisfaction that you are an integral part of the O&P profession's highly respected, essential national credentialing system.

"A two-hour mandatory training session will be held via Internet and telephone, and a mentoring system will be introduced. In order to join us for training you must be able to simultaneously access the Internet for visuals and the phone for interaction. We know your time is valuable so you will receive one CPE credit for the training session. The minimum system requirements to connect to the web conference training are:

Windows 98/NT2000/XP, Netscape Communicator 4.5 or Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.x.JavaScript and cookies enabled; MacOS 8.5 or later, 64 MB RAM, Netscape Communicator 4.5 or Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.x, JavaScript and cookies enabled; Solaris 2.7 or Solaris 8, SPARC CPU, Netscape Communicator 4.5, JavaScript and cookies enabled; 56 Kbps Internet connection."
