Amputees In Hollywood LLC is now in its fifteenth year witha new website helping to tell the story of the O&P profession in the moviesand on television.
During my years with Otto Bock Orthopedic Industry USA (nowOttobock Health Care) I came in contact with the movie industry throughIndustrial Light & Magic on The Empire Strikes Back, and later on the movieversion of The Fugitive.
Afterwe engaged in the War on Terror following 9/11 shows like Law and Order andCold Case started having actors portraying amputee veterans on the show. As aprosthetist I was not pleased with how my profession was being presented on TV,and seeing an above amputee fitted with below the knee prosthesis walking witha pathological not at all common to an amputee wearing prosthesis does notrepresent the work of my profession. It was then that I conceived theidea for Amputees In Hollywood. Networking with individuals I knew in theamputee community I developed a website to promote amputee actors in place ofactors pretending to be amputees in movie roles and as extras.
An upcoming episode of Gray’s Anatomy will include a numberof the members of Amputees In Hollywood.
