Has anyone else had this problem?
I am writing you to discuss a problem I am currently having with Medicare. I was informed on June 4, 2012 that my company’s Medicare Provider Number was deactivated by Medicare on May 7, 2012. The reason for the deactivation was based on the fact that I failed to Revalidate my Medicare Enrollment within the sixty day period following notification. According to NSC, the revalidation letter was mailed on December 16, 2011. We have been checking the list on CMS.gov listing the letters that have been mailed to the providers. On the list “medicare part a/b revalidations mailed November – December 2011” Kenney Orthopedics was not listed. In fact, we were not listed on any of the mailing list until the file “NSC revalidation letters mailed (Update 06/03/2012)” was posted on the web site. According to Mark Majestic, Deputy Director of Provider Enrollment Operations, on October 27, 2011 during a National Provider Call, the list on the CMS.gov would be “regularly updated and “everyone will be able to go to one spot and see, if in fact, they were mailed a letter”. Mr. Majestic goes on to say that “CMS has instructed the contractors to make at least two telephone calls to the phone numbers that are in PECOS to try to reach somebody to let them know the revalidation letter was mailed and that you have not responded”. We did not receive the letters or any of the phone calls, even though we have verified the address and phone numbers for our company.
The fact that my Medicare Provider Number had been deactivated May 7, 2012 was discovered by accident on June 4, 2012 when we called Medicare regarding another issue; we still have not received official notification from Medicare. However, today in the mail, I received a notice dated May 30, 2012, concerning the deactivation of my provider number, two days short of a month since it was deactivated.
My current situation, and what I hope you might be able to assist me with, is I cannot provide any items to Medicare Patients until my Provide Number is reactivated. In addition, because I was not notified that my number had been deactivated, I cannot receive payment for anything that I delivered, in good faith, between May 7, 2012 and today. This will cause a tremendous burden as Medicare represents over 50% of my company’s income. I understand there is a provision that allows for a one time 60-day extension to complete the revalidation. If this extension could be granted with a start date prior to the deactivation, it would allow the revalidation to take place without disruption of service to our patients. The CMS 855 was delivered to NSC today, June 5, 2012.
