OPAF and their First Volley Adaptive Tennis Clinics have received grant funding from USTA Iowa for clinics in their new home state. First Volley is OPAF’s nationally recognized adaptive tennis program that brings tennis skills and drills to amputees and those with physical challenges. Founded in 2005, First Volley has brought tennis back to a population that has literally had something taken away from them and given them the tools to return to the court. Our goal is to bring amputees and challenged ambulatory (standing) players back to the game of tennis and have some fun.
“This grant funding from USTA Iowa will help OPAF to host at least two First Volley Adaptive Tennis Clinics in Iowa. We are looking forward to participating in the University of Northern Iowa Adaptive Sports Camp this June in Cedar Falls and are also looking at clinics in either Waterloo or Cedar Rapids or both,” said OPAF Executive Director, Robin Burton. First Volley Clinics are 2-3 hours and include one on one and group instruction with equipment and prizes for participants and a chance to learn or re-learn tennis skills from certified First Volley instructors with experience in adaptive tennis on court.
First Volley Adaptive Tennis Clinic is one of several adaptive recreational sports programs hosted by OPAF and The First Clinics, which recently relocated to Waterloo, Iowa. OPAF develops implements, partners and hosts adaptive recreational opportunities for amputees and people with physical challenges. First Swing, adaptive golf, First Swim, McKeever’s First Ride, therapeutic horsemanship and First Dive Intro to Scuba are also part of the OPAF family of clinics. New Firsts are in development and include First Dance, First Paddle (kayaking) and First Shoot (target and skeet).
