Responses to non-hazardous resin question

M. Britt Spears CPO

Thank you to all that answered my question below is the question followed by the replies.

*********Original question:***********

Dear list,
Has anyone used the newly advertised non-hazardous resin? Does it work very well and how about the setting time and strength?
Thanks in advance,
M. Britt Spears CPO

I assume you’re talking about the eco – lam acryl. We have been using for a week or so now and have found it to be excellent. It was recommended to me by a friend who is using it in his central fab also. If you have any questions, give us a call. Talk to me (Garth) or my tech (Mark).

I like it a lot…seems like a better finish and if for some reason you need to heat and flare I found it does not delaminate…the only thing is…use a scale! If you don’t it will go off fast!!! Brent

We have used it quite a bit and have found that it works well. Just do not set it off too hot!

I have used the FabTech systems resin in Belize for a few years. It
took a
small learning curve (humidity plus heat plus new plaster) but we now
laminate with it on all legs and have it cure and ready to cut out in
about
35-45 minutes. It does require the use of their rapid cure accelerator
as
well as the bag for heating the lamination while it cures by way of a
hair
dryer.

The time is a little longer than some resins but the benefit of being
non-hazardous for shipping purposes is well worth it not to mention the
reduced toxicity for all parties involved.

Strength & weight: We have had no failures yet our laminations are on
the
beefy side as we do not always have available carbon fiber so we make
up
with extra layers of textiles.

In short, I would use it stateside if I had the need.

I used it. It’s good. Compaired to SPT resin, it seems stronger. The negative is that it is VERY sensitive to moisture – get’s fuzzy.

I hope that you will share the results of your inquiry about the new
resin.
I know that we are all hopeful that a resin that can ship without a
hazardous fee will work well.

One word of caution is that this resin should probably be referred to
as “a
material that ships without a hazardous materials classification”, as
opposed to being “non-hazardous”. I like to think of anything
classified as
“non-hazardous” as being something that a child could ingest.
Otherwise, it
should still be classified as hazardous.

Good luck, and I hope you get a very good response.
