Responses to NEED HELP WITH BOOTS

Vincent Gest

Thank you for all of your responses.

ORIGINAL POST:

“I am experiencing difficulties locating an appropriate work boot/shoe for a
patient. Hopefully one of you can help.

The patient is 6’5″ 315 lbs with diabetes and a history of greater toe
ulceration from plantar and lateral pressure. He works in a lab and his
employer requires he wear steel toe boots/shoes with a non-marking sole.

His shoe size is 15 EEE. His greater toes tend to depress when weight
bearing leading to skin breakdown. In order to provide an adequate diabetic
insert, the boot/shoe must be an extra depth design.

I’ve researched BA Mason, PW Minor, Footsmart, & Iron Age shoes, among
others.

Do any of you know of an alternate source?”

Here are the responses in no particular order. In the interest of brevity, I
didn’t include duplicate answers.

I have found that Apis Footwear Company/Mt. Emey have the largest size
selection. One of there brand is known as Boxer Dogs. 1-888-937-2747. They
go up to size 20 and have widths up to 9E.

Have you lokked at Sequoia or Comfortrite shoes. I know they carry 5Eand 6E
workboot that could be considered diabetic.

I can make the boots for you, they will be custom made though. We make
Custom Shoes & Boots of all types and styles. We would gladly help.

Try Red Wing Shoe Store, they specialize in work boots sizes 4-16, widths
AA-EEEE.
———————————————————-
Have you tried Dunham Boot company?
http://www.dunhambootmakers.com/work/MenCategory.asp
They have sizes up to 20 in some styles, and up to 6 E in the width. Order
a 4 or 6 E to be sure, since you are adding an insert.
Also, try Redwing shoes http://www.redwingshoes.com/
Neither company are considered “orthopaedic”, but in my experience, they are
more accomodative than PW minor’s depth workboots.

Try Sole Tech they make work boots for Michelin. The boot has a thick
removeable insert and can get with steel toes. Ask for Buzz Cutler.
1-978-744-8700. They don’t sell directly to O&P facilities but they have
distributors that do.
———————————————————
Call or look up Grundman Boot company. I often order 15 size with fiber
toe. It is as strong as steel toe. If you measure a 3eee on the branak
(sp) device add 2 widths.
Speak with Virgil at Grundman.

Grundman shoe company www.Grundmanshoes.com will fabricate a boot to any
size, and I mean ANY size or width.
The boot you’ve described is a model #37101 with Steel Toe or fiberglass
toe cap and a special modification of an extra 1/2″ toe box height.
On their website it’s listed as a model #701, the 8″ lace up work boot with
3 pairs of speed hooks at the top.
The boot comes with a leather covered plaztazote liner that is 1/4″ thick
and easily removable.
If your patient measures a 15 3E on the Brannock device, you’ll probably be
directed towards a 15 5E in this manufacturer’s line. Take the
recommendation.
These boots are very well made. I am confident once your patient uses this
model, and manufacturer, he’ll not easily change to another.

I don’t know the name of the company, but in Washington State, we still have
some loggers and many of them have custom boots made by a company nearby.
You might look on line and type in custom boot for loggers and see what
comes up. They seem to be well made and very durable. And, I would think
that if requested, extra depth could be done.

The operative word here is custom. Loveless Orthopedic Appliance Co. 24 S.W.
29th. Street, Oklahoma City, OK 73119. Phone 405 631-9731 800 637-9731 Fax

This company will make you anything you need. Tell them you want a boot like
the (P.W. Minor Hercules ST)for instance and they will make you a pair of
15EEE. Everything is ala carte. They have a nice color catalog and will fax
you a price list.

You may want to consider looking at Double H boots. Here is a link:
http://www.bootbay.com/hh/?gtse=goog&gtkw=double%20h
I just bought some Double H work boots in EEE for my fiance who has nothing
but problems with most shoes in the area of the 1st met head. His actually
do have good depth in them. They are the only one’s he’s found to be wide
enough.
——————————————————-
We have used Lehigh boots because they come fairly wide. I do not know if
they come up to size 15, however. The other boot we have been using lately
is made by Dunham which is a New Balance Company. they come up to 4E.
Neither meet SADMERC requirements for Therapeutic shoes for diabetics, if
that is an issue. I like both of them because they have more oblique toes
and we have been able to get orthotics into them. Good Luck!

Get him Custom Boots- They can be made from American Shoe in Bedford Hills,
NY.
Ask for Bob. He can get reinforced toes as an option.

Thanks again, everyone!
