how to open a business in Canada

Hello List-

This is a question for the Canadian Practitioners out there….If one was to open his/her own shop, what resources are out there to help with the logistics?  I am interested in how others got started.  What type of liability insurance do you need?  What is the approximate cost of overhead to get you started (equipment and stock)?  How much collateral do you need before you can set up an account with distributors?  I know for many of you, these questions sound silly, but I would really like to get an idea, before I even consider moving into private practice.  Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
