Academy Meeting to Examine Product Failures

For practitioners whose O&P training was prior to 1999, chances are you haven’t been exposed to anything like the information presented in the Academy’s Advanced Training Series on Material Science & Prosthetic/Orthotic Design: Maximizing Patient Safety — a special course on April 29-May 1 in White Bear Lake, MN. Packed into three intensive days, this course will explore relevant engineering design principles and their application to the selection and incorporation of components into custom prostheses and orthoses. It offers solid, basic and intermediate information in two areas that didn’t exist ten years ago.

Unlike other presentations about material science where speakers tiptoe around naming the devices that failed, this course will include a detailed review of documented mechanical failures of prosthetic and orthotic devices and the extent of the resulting malpractice implications.

John Michael, MEd, CPO, FISPO, FAAOP and Australian managing engineer Bill Contoyannis, REHAB Tech at the Centre for Biomedical Engineering at Monash University will examine the fatigue crack growth of prosthetic components based on a large number of product failures investigated.

This 3-day Advanced Training Course was developed for prosthetists and orthotists who want to increase their knowledge of the principles of materials science and the application of proven engineering principles. Prosthetists and orthotists will become familiar with real-world mechanical failures of prosthetic and orthotic devices and the engineering know-how to create stronger, lighter and more durable devices. Lectures and case study presentations will encourage participants to develop a basic understanding of malpractice implications when a device fails to perform as expected.

Participants will learn the 10 most common problems with O&P devices that result in malpractice litigation, develop an appreciation of what triggers litigation and how to avoid it, and learn practical methods to maximize the structural integrity of a prosthesis or orthosis without adding excessive weight or bulk to the device.

Participants will also receive a complimentary copy of Strength of Materials by Tom Lunsford, MSE, CO. This reference book provides an overview of materials strength and theory related to design, fabrication and riveting guidelines.

This course has been awarded 21 PCE credits.
