Stop PT Encroachment

Stop PT Encroachment into O&P
Call for examples and pictures

The American Orthotic & Prosthetic Association (AOPA) is
working closely with the Ohio Orthotic and Prosthetic
Association to fight the aggressive efforts by the American
Physical Therapy Association and their state affiliates to
expand the Ohio Physical Therapy Practice Act. The PT
associations are attempting to expand their state practice
act to include the prescription, fabrication and fitting of
orthotic and prosthetic services.

AOPA views these efforts as an outrageous attempt to
encroach on the practice of O&P and accomplish through
legislation what physical therapists have not earned
through educational qualifications. This effort by the
powerful physical therapy lobby poses a serious threat to
the quality of O&P care delivered to patients and must be
stopped.

In order to set the record straight, AOPA is asking the O&P
field for examples where physical therapists have
inappropriately fabricated or fitted orthotic and/or
prosthetic devices. Numerous practitioners have supplied
AOPA with examples in the past but we are seeking
additional examples to make our case even more compelling.
This request is not limited to practitioners in Ohio.
If you have any examples of any inappropriate O&P care
provided by physical therapists or have questions regarding
this request, please contact AOPA’s Walt Gorski at
(571) 431-0809. We are particularly interested in
receiving digital pictures of substandard quality devices.
