I apologize if this email comes unwanted into this list, but I wanted to tell you about an opportunity to make a huge difference for a group of people. I go to Haiti on a yearly basis as a volunteer translator with a group called Healing Hands for Haiti. HHH is a non-profit organization based out of Salt Lake City, but we have a clinic in Haiti and our main focus is working with the handicapped there. On our last trip to Haiti (2 weeks ago) we took down 2 Prosthetists, an Orthotist, and several Physical and Occupational Therapists. We fitted the following while we were there:
2- below elbow prostheses
2- above elbow prostheses
3- below knee prostheses
4- Above knee prostheses
In addition, we took 5 AK casts which will modified and returned for fitting with the next prosthetic team. There are over 100,000 amputees in Haiti who really have no hope, in their minds, of having new limbs. We’re trying to change that. We also worked with 4 orphanages while we were there, monitoring and teaching the caregivers as they worked with handicapped children.
We’re looking for professionals who would be interested in volunteering their time and money to go to Haiti with us on future trips. Please understand that this is a volunteer organization and all expenses for the trip are shared by the group going down. We will be doing fund raising, but you can probably count on covering your transportation costs, to and from Haiti, as well as transportation in Haiti. The clinic houses 22 people and it costs $35 per night to stay there, which includes 2 meals a day.
