thoughts?

Thanks again for the update. In the last few weeks, I talked with three

different Hanger Managers, from W. Virginia, Georgia, and Florida. All three

claim the Hanger”brass” have never told them to buy Hanger owned products or

buy from S.P.S. (although they do get price breaks that reflects in their

monthly bonuses). The manager in Georgia fits all DonJoy knee braces, because

the Dr’s insist on them. That was before Hanger owned DonJoy.

The point is, independent O&P facilities may have no choice but to buy

Hanger products, in view of the Hanger emphasis on detailing Dr’s directly,

mailings, ads in Dr’s publications, and special deals to the Dr’s.

One more note. When I repped for Hanger in a few years ago, there were

only two of us in the State. There are now four and they are looking for

more. The reps cannot make a commission from Hanger facilities until they

personally detail in that facilities area, Dr’s and patient care groups

specificied by the Hanger Manager.

And. . . I faxed you a letter from S.P.S. to a company I represent. “. .

. expanding warehouse. . . millions of dollars in inventory. . . training

new people. . . ”

Fact is, Hanger has some of the best, most skilled O&P practitioners in

the world. (and some of them are my best friends) but I see Hanger business

practices as a real threat to our profession. That is why I view your “who

owns who” so important to all of us.

Although Cascade, the DAFO company, is owned by a CPO, I think it is

interesting and of concern to the O&P profession to note that the majority

of their business is with Physical Therapist and not the O&P professional.

Although you are often times asked to make adjustments to their products,

they are billing third party insurances and bypassing the orthotist most of

the time. You might want to consider alternative sources for these types of

products and services unless you enjoy having the PTs entering the orthotic

business.
