Bone spurs on knee?

Chuck Bryant

Greetings —

I’m a 41 year-old male racewalker/jogger, BKA. After a full marathon this

past May, I noticed the emergence of what *in my layman’s perception* SEEMS

TO BE bony protrusions on my kneecap, toward the top at each side. The

skin’s bumped up maybe 4-5 mm higher than usual. This condition didn’t

create any significant problems in everyday life — some occasional mild

discomfort as it presses against the socket liner, and it’s frequently

pinkish, but it causes no blistering, and certainly no incapacitating pain.

It didn’t even affect my doing the Cape Cod marathon in October, which was

actually my third or fourth-BEST marathon (of seventeen events in six

years).

Only this past weekend doing the Rocket City Marathon in Huntsville,

Alabama, did this create any substantial pain — enough to interfere with

my racing. I’m accustomed to some discomfort and even pain as part of a

marathon, and I wasn’t blistering, so I simply resigned myself to being

stuck in third gear and continued grinding on to the finish line. It took

me a full hour longer than I expected, largely as a result of the pain that

hindered me from ever getting up to and sustaining my typical race pace.

I’m making an appointment to see my doctor, but first I’d like some other

real-world input first from those of you who may well know more about this

or related issues than the typical MD (no disrespect intended thereto). So

I welcome your comments, concerns, and suggestions for adapting to this.

Early next week I’ll summarize input from both the OANDP and the amputee

lists.

Thank you,

chuck
