Fund Continues to Help Hundreds of Amputees

The Barr Foundation of Boca Raton, Florida, and the United Amputee Services

Association (U.A.S.A.) of Orlando, Florida, are pleased to announce that their

joint humanitarian effort, the Barr United Amputee Assistance Fund

(B.U.A.A.F.),

has successfully fitted over 100 amputees located in 34 states and four

countries.

Over 60 prosthetist professionals located internationally have participated in

sponsoring and assisting deserving individuals. Both of the organizations are

not-for-profit amputee support groups. The “Fund” was established in 1996 in

order to fill the need of purchasing prosthetic limbs for amputees that

otherwise

could not afford them. The “Fund” pays for the materials and fitting of a new

prosthesis after the financial need of the recipient has been established.

The most recent B.U.A.A.F. recipients, pictures enclosed, were two Mexican

nationals, sponsored by John Zeffer, C.P.O., of Ensenada, Mexico. Both

amputees were able to return to the work force after being successfully fitted

with artificial legs. The Arthur Finnieston Clinic of Coral Gables, Florida,

and the

Garrison Orthotic and Prosthetic Clinic of Margate, Florida, donated component

parts to aid in this effort.

“The truly inspiring and rewarding part,” said Zeffer, “is that these men

are now

returned to the Mexican economy as productive members. They are no longer a

burden on society, and the quality of their lives has been enormously improved.”

In addition to assisting low income amputees return to productive lives, an

objective of both organizations has been the creation of regulatory

legislation in

the field of O and P. The groups were instrumental this year in the passage of

legislation requiring mandatory licensing in the State of Florida.
