O&P providers are driven to deliver the most appropriate solutions for patients—both physically and psychosocially. While there is nuance in any patient’s O&P care, for most situations, there are established protocols to guide component selection and commercially available products to satisfy their requirements. Sometimes though, practitioners and technicians are called to draw upon their creativity in meeting a unique need, a specific aesthetic request, or even to solve a challenging fitting or fabrication problem. This spring, we asked our readers to tell us about their creative solutions. We’re pleased to share their creations and process improvements.
A Plaid Silicone Hand Protector
When our patient who has a partial hand amputation came to us asking for a unique design for her silicone hand protector, we worked with her to make her vision come to life. She talked about how she would rather have a pattern on the socket instead of just a plain color, so we talked through various ideas until we ultimately landed on plaid, one of her favorite patterns.
