The Cambodia Trust, working with the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Indonesia, and supported by the Nippon Foundation of Japan, is offering 19 scholarships to Indonesian citizens to study prosthetics and orthotics.
Eighteen scholarships are available for students to train at the Jakarta School of Prosthetics & Orthotics (JSPO), based at the Polytechnic of Health Science (Poltekkes) Jakarta 1, in Cilandak, South Jakarta, Indonesia. The scholarship for this three-year educational and training program from the Nippon Foundation includes a monthly allowance, accommodation, uniforms, student toolkit, and an annual trip home. The successful candidates will earn the ISPO Category II status.
“At present, there are few internationally trained prosthetist-orthotists in Indonesia,” said Peter Carey, MA, PhD, FRHisT, the Cambodia Trust’s country director in Indonesia. “However there is a large disabled population in need of rehabilitation services. Over the next ten years, the profession will be developed under the guidance of the Jakarta School of Prosthetics & Orthotics. Successful candidates will thus be the pioneer generation of prosthetics and orthotics professionals in Indonesia.”
One additional scholarship is available for degree-level education at the Tanzanian Centre for Orthopedic Technology (TATCOT), a department of the University of Tumaini, Moshi, Tanzania. This scholarship includes English-language training, full tuition, housing, a living stipend, and one flight to Indonesia at the end of each year of study. Upon successful completion of this four-year degree program, the candidate will be awarded the ISPO Category I degree. In exchange for accepting the scholarship, the recipient will be expected to return to and remain in Indonesia and practice the prosthetic-orthotic profession for a minimum of nine years.
According to JSPO, “The language of course instruction [for both programs] will be English. The Cambodia Trust is an equal opportunity employer and actively encourages applications from candidates with disabilities provided they meet the criteria listed [in the application].”
The application deadline for the TATCOT scholarship is Friday, May 28, 2010. The application deadline for the JSPO scholarships is Friday, June 18, 2010.
