The National Institutes of Health awarded Cody McDonald, PhD, MPH, CPO/L, in collaboration with Graci Finco, PhD, CPO, a $426,000 grant to study bioethical challenges related to bionic and robotic prostheses. McDonald is an associate professor at the University of Washington, Division of Orthotics and Prosthetics. Finco is an assistant professor at Texas Christian University.
The project, “Bionic and robotic prostheses: Identifying bioethical concerns from key groups to improve development and clinical translation approaches,” will be completed over two years.
Using qualitative methods, the research team will identify and disseminate bioethical concerns of people with limb loss and limb difference, clinicians, and policymakers to improve approaches in the development and translation of bionic and robotic prostheses.
