Sonera, a developer of noninvasive magnetic sensors that could have applications across prosthetic device control, accessibility, brain-computer interfaces, and health monitoring, is reported to have been purchased by Apple.
Sonera was founded in 2018 by students at the University of California, Berkeley, to develop sensors that measure neural and muscular signals rather than relying on conventional electrical measurements. The technology has potential for higher-quality neural measurements without requiring surgically implanted brain-computer interface hardware. Potential applications include controlling prosthetic devices and incorporating the technology into consumer wearables.
Apple has not publicly announced the Sonera acquisition; financial terms were not disclosed.
