The American Board for Certification in Orthotics, Prosthetics & Pedorthics (ABC), in partnership with the Orthotics and Prosthetics Foundation for Education and Research, recognized Jessica Smit, CPO, as the 2024 recipients of the ABC Resident Travel Award.
Smit was selected for her National Commission on Orthotic and Prosthetic Education residency project and received $2,500 to attend and present her research, “Metabolic cost of walking during steady and non-steady state tests in persons with lower-limb amputations,” at the American Academy of Orthotists and Prosthetists 2024 Annual Meeting and Scientific Symposium in Chicago, March 6-9.
Smit received her bachelor’s degree in kinesiology from Michigan State University followed by a master’s degree in orthotics and prosthetics from Eastern Michigan University in 2020. She completed her orthotics residency at Ann and Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago and her prosthetics residency at Shirley Ryan AbilityLab in Chicago where she continues to work as a clinician. She earned her CPO credential in November 2023.
