The number of durable medical equipment, prosthetics, orthotics and supplies (DMEPOS) appeals have increased by 300 percent within this fiscal year, according to a bulletin from the American Association for Homecare (AAHomecare). The Office of Medicare Hearings & Appeals (OMHA) had 184,240 appeals at the Administrative Law Judge (ALJ) level for fiscal year 2016.
DMEPOS appeals at the ALJ level make up about 49 percent of all appeals for 2017, according to AAHomecare. The number of appeals rose to 591,962 at the end of August. As of mid-October, the number of DMEPOS appeals was 291,047. The percentage is consistent with the reporting from fiscal year 2015 and fiscal year 2016, which also shows that nearly half of the appeals are from DMEPOS
