O&P interventions are most effective when they are integrated into a multidisciplinary rehabilitation strategy. In this issue, we explore how practitioners can work with physical therapists and patients’ caregivers to support patient rehabilitation, as well as how healthcare professionals’ attitudes toward disability can impact care.
Individuals with lower-limb amputations often mention that they received little to no physical therapy following their amputations. However, prosthetists and physical therapists agree that therapeutic gait training is an important aspect of helping people to use their prostheses to their full potential and avoid detrimental gait deviations. “Empowering Patients With Therapeutic Gait Training” discusses the characteristics of therapeutic gaiting training, optimal timing, and how to help patients access this type of therapy to achieve their mobility goals.
