Four Steps to a Fulfilling Workplace

We asked our experts what steps business owners and employees can take to create a better, more positive work environment? Considering how new employees are trained can help retain employees and lead to a more positive workplace, says Jessica Norrell, CPO, MBA, owner of MOZN Solutions. “A lot of the teams I work with now are creating tailored onboarding and educational processes to ensure new employees are heavily guided through their first three to six months of onboarding,” she says. Gone are the days of siloed information, Norrell says. “As an employee, look at how you share knowledge with your colleagues. We need team members who are willing to share their knowledge to help the team and the company as a whole,” she says. Kelsey Troy, senior vice president and chief human resources officer, Hanger, Texas, says a strong workplace culture requires that managers listen to their employees. “It’s critical to know what’s important to them and how you can create the best environment for them to do their best work,” says Troy, who added that Hanger recently hosted a town hall at its headquarters in Austin with this in mind. In addition, Hanger senior leaders regularly travel around the country to connect in person with local teams, she says. In concert with that perspective, companies also need to invest in their managers, Troy says. “As the work world is changing, our managers are critical to ensuring employees understand expectations, get feedback on their performance, and receive investment to grow their careers.” Gerald Stark, PhD, MSEM, CPO/L, director of clinical affairs for Ottobock Patient Care, Texas, agrees, saying that it is paramount to invest time and resources in a company’s managers. “A good manager realizes they are a coordinator of these [working] relationships and attempts to understand what each employee’s ‘currency’ is,” he says. “For some it is money, for others, career differentiation, for others it is their time, still others volunteerism.” Every manager needs to find what each of their employees is looking for, says Stark, who has done considerable research on the people who work in O&P. “Younger employees seek competency and expansion of their perceived value. [Recently certified clinicians seek] an increased role and development of a specialty. Employees with 16 to 20 years of experience want a better work/life balance as well as a sense of ownership. Employees with 25 or more years seek continued relevance and meaning of their careers.” With these simple goals in mind, having a healthy work environment that supports those within it should not be out of reach.
