The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) turns 20 this year. Enacted in 1996, HIPAA establishes national standards regarding the security and privacy of patients’ medical records and other private health information (PHI) and outlines how and when that information can be used. In an increasingly complex and interconnected world, it is more important than ever that electronic private health information (ePHI) be kept secure. The personal information contained in medical has monetary value to criminals, and businesses can be subject to penalties should the information fall into the wrong hands.
