The Department of Health and Human Services assistant secretary for technology policy/Office of the National Coordinator (ONC) for Health Information Technology is easing testing requirements for electronic health records.
The ONC announced that it will not enforce a mandate in 2016’s 21st Century Cures Act that “health IT developers successfully test the real-world use of their technology for interoperability in the type of setting in which such technology would be marketed.”
EHR vendors are no longer required to submit annual real-world testing plans and will not be penalized if they do not submit the plans.
The ONC said that the new rules will remain in effect until December 31, 2026, or until HHS completes a deregulatory action to revise the existing language.
