Although in many cases people with upper-limb amputations want and need multiple prosthetic devices as well as specialized terminal attachments that enable greater capabilities and open more opportunities for both work and recreation, a number of obstacles stand in their way: affordability issues, and insurance denials and delays; a lack of knowledge and understanding of what’s available to them, plus appropriate guidance and training to build a comfort level that supports long-term use of their devices; and a need for partnerships that offer ongoing and future support.
Several experts in upper-limb prosthetics shared their impressions and methods to address these shortfalls.
