Legs4Africa rebranded its name to STAND, with the new tagline We Walk Together. The organization, based in the United Kingdom, has focused on recycling prosthetic components and supporting rehabilitation centers across sub-Saharan Africa for over a decade. The renaming underscores its commitment to decolonizing development work and fostering equitable partnerships.
“Our original name, Legs4Africa, served us well in establishing a recognized presence within the prosthetics community. However, as our understanding of our role evolved, we realized that our name needed to better reflect the full scope of our mission,” said founder Tom Williams, OBE. “Our work goes beyond simply providing prosthetic legs; it includes supporting amputee community groups, training local counsellors, and empowering peer support volunteers to enhance accessibility and holistic services for people with limb differences.”
The organization consulted with team members and stakeholders about the rebranding efforts.
“We sought a name that encapsulates our mission of partnership and empowerment, rather than one that might unintentionally imply a one-sided aid relationship. STAND was chosen to signify our commitment to standing together with the communities we serve, promoting dignity, agency, and comprehensive care.”
