Officials at the W.G. (Bill) Hefner Medical Center, flagship of the Salisbury VA Health Care System in North Carolina, began on-site custom fabrication of lower-limb prosthetic devices on December 15. The facility had previously been using outside fabrication services.
The change will reduce the time veterans wait to receive their prostheses, which is now about three weeks from casting to delivery, Charles S. Doerr, Salisbury VA supervisory prosthetist and orthotic laboratory chief, told WBTV.
