The mix of didactic lectures and exciting workshops at the Summer Scientific Meeting of the Midwest Chapter of the American Academy of Orthotists and Prosthetists (AAOP) May 30-June 1 drew a crowd reminiscent of the great programs in the Chapter's past. The centerpiece of the meeting in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, was the highly anticipated Orthotic Stance Control Symposium on Friday morning. Presentations by representatives from Otto Bock, Horton, and Becker Orthopedic detailed each company's unique design and application. Ivan Long, CP, also gave a remarkable report on his experiences in adapting an Otto Bock C-leg and Mauch SNS to his KAFO producing hybrid stance control. A lively panel discussion and questions from the standing-room-only audience followed the symposium. The remaining didactic sessions included reports from Lance Hoxie, executive director of the American Board for Certification in Orthotics and Prosthetics (ABC) and ABC President Steve Whiteside, CO. A fascinating casting technique using sand and vacuum was demonstrated by Dr. Yeongchi Wu, formerly of the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago (RIC). This technique allows portability, thus effectively serving third-world countries afflicted by landmines. Several ancillary activities occurred during this exciting meeting. The O&P Assistance Fund (OPAF) sponsored a First Swing clinic in partnership with the National Amputee Golf Association (NAGA). Participants in the annual golf outing generously contributed over $500 to OPAF. OPAF sponsored a Fitness for Everyone Clinic, conducted by Dennis Oehler, Todd Schafhauser, and Sarah Noonan. More than 60 patients, therapists, and practitioners attended. During the Chapter's Annual Business Meeting, special recognition was given to Alfred Denison, CP, Academy charter member and Midwest Chapter co-founder. "Denny" was presented with a certificate of appreciation and a scrapbook of remembrances and anecdotes from people whose lives he has touched through his many years of service.
