ACPOC Abstracts Deadline

Time is running out for submission of abstracts for presentations at the 2003 meeting of the Association of Children's Prosthetic-Orthotic Clinics (ACPOC) May 14-17, St. Pete Beach, Florida. The "Call for Papers" deadline is October 1; however, submissions will be accepted until the end of the first week of October, according to Melody Raymond, society assistant.

"The Call for Papers" is available at the association's website: www.acpoc.org . The application form can be downloaded from the website. Authors of accepted abstracts will be notified by December 1, 2002.

The categories of presentations include:

Scientific Presentation: These are five to ten-minute presentations of research findings. Papers in this category are expected to describe the findings of a study with a specific hypothesis, appropriate methodology and execution, and suitable data analysis, with conclusions that reflect the findings. While there is no minimum number of research subjects, the number of subjects studied should be statistically adequate. If indicated, Human Subjects Committee approval should be obtained. These presentations are intended to ultimately improve the standard of care of children with limb deficiencies.

The categories of pediatric prosthetics or orthotics, pediatric orthopedic surgery (as related to treatment of a limb deficient child), physical and occupational therapy, socioeconomic issues, or any other topics related to children's prosthetics and orthotics are welcome for submission.

Poster Presentation: These present relatively simple topics or small series, or "tips and tricks" in a visual and written format.

Creative Solutions: These are five to ten minute presentations of the results of new or innovative prosthetic, orthotic, or other therapeutic interventions. Scientific rigor is not the point of these papers; rather, they should focus on original, inventive, or imaginative approaches to problems afflicting children with limb deficiencies. These presentations are intended to inspire discussion and collaboration among meeting participants, to provide new ideas for participants to implement immediately in the day-to-day care of their patients, and to stimulate future scientific investigation.

Challenging Case Presentation: These are 10-20 minute presentations of difficult clinical problems without obvious solutions (one problem per presentation). Audience participation is critically important to the effectiveness of Challenging Case presentations, so these cases will be selected for their anticipated appeal to meeting participants.

Symposium Presentation: These are approximately two-hour, multidisciplinary presentations on a single topic. Presenters should seek to provide and integrate multiple points of view on their chosen topic, but in the interest of audience attention span, the number of individuals presenting will be limited to four (or fewer) per Symposium. Audience participation is critically important to the effectiveness of Symposia, so these will be selected for their anticipated appeal to meeting participants, based on the results of previous ACPOC Meeting evaluations.

Workshop Presentation: These are approximately three-hour, non-commercial comprehensive presentations* on topics of general interest to meeting participants, akin to Instructional Courses. Workshops will be selected for their anticipated appeal to meeting participants based on the results of previous ACPOC Meeting evaluations, and on the breadth of their coverage of the chosen topic. Presenters will be expected to provide handouts relevant to their presentation. Creative approaches to adult learning are encouraged.

ACPOC notes that the exact time allotted for each presentation will be determined by the Program Committee when the program is finalized. Authors of accepted papers will receive sufficient prior notification of their time limit in order to prepare their presentations appropriately, the association said.
