AOPA, Academy: No Joint Meeting

There will be no joint national meeting of the American Orthotic & Prosthetic Association (AOPA) and the American Academy of Orthotists & Prosthetists (AAOP), the two organizations announced July 28.

Although the AOPA board supports the single-meeting concept, the Academy board was not in favor, partly due to financial concerns as it pursues grants for education and research, according to an open letter from both organizations to the O&P field.

About a year ago, the two O&P entities began discussions on combining their respective national meetings into one joint annual educational conference and trade show. A joint task force composed of both practitioners and exhibitors developed a tentative schedule about how a combined meeting could flow as well as financial estimates. The committee's findings were reported to the boards of directors of the two organizations.

According to the open letter signed by AOPA President Jon P. Leimkuehler, CPO, FAAOP, and Academy President Donald E. Katz, CO, FAAOP, the AOPA board supports the single-meeting concept "based upon the keen interest of its supplier members and favorable response that its general membership has given to the idea of a joint O&P event."

The letter continues, "The Academy board, due in part to financial concerns as it continues to aggressively pursue grants to further education and research attainments on behalf of the profession, does not feel it's in the best interest of its members to eliminate its annual meeting in favor of a single, combined meeting over an extended period of time."

The letter concludes, "The relationship between our two organizations is as strong and important as ever. We'd like to thank the task force members for their diligent efforts in studying this important topic. We're committed to working together on initiatives that impact the provision of high-quality orthotic and prosthetic care..."
