New Residents Join RDA

From left: Ben Blecha, CO; Loren Decker, Mellissa Bowman, and Jeremy Burleson. Four new residents have joined Rehab Designs of America (RDA) in Kansas City, Missouri, where the company is based. They include prosthetic residents Loren Decker, Jeremy Burleson, and Ben Blecha, CO, and Mellissa Bowman, an orthotic resident. The students are fulfilling residency terms required by the National Commission on Orthotic & Prosthetic Education (NCOPE).

"We are very pleased with these individuals," said CEO/President Byron H. Whitaker, CPO. "We have always believed it is important to provide educational opportunities. In fact, many of our clinical managers in the company began as residents with us. We know that if we provide an extraordinary experience, many of these residents will choose to remain with RDA and assist with growth."

Decker attended prosthetic school at California State University-Dominguez Hills (CSUDH) and is a graduate of Tabor College, Hillsboro, Kansas.

Burleson also attended school at CSUDH and graduated from the University of Missouri-Kansas City. He worked as a technician at RDA for several years before attending prosthetic school.

Blecha is a graduate of the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center School of Allied Health Sciences, Dallas. He most recently worked at Shriners Hospital for Children in South Carolina.

Bowman completed orthotic training at California State University Rancho Los Amigos Medical Center, Downey and is a graduate of Drury College, Springfield, Missouri.

The prosthetic residents work under the supervision of Senior Clinical Manager Doyle Collier, CP, and rotate through RDA's eight clinics in the Kansas City area. This provides exposure to a full range of patients from pediatric to geriatric.

"Our residents have the opportunity to treat patients with all diagnoses," said Collier. "We participate in multiple clinics in which we see children, the elderly, athletes, and trauma patients. We ensure that our residents have the opportunity to attend all internal education courses and want them to learn how to use the latest in technology."

In the orthotics residency, Bowman works under the direct supervision of Senior clinical Manager Brian Kerl, CO. She sees patients with Kerl and Whitaker at RDA's clinics at Children's Mercy Hospital and the University of Kansas Medical Center.

RDA is also providing an orthotic residency to Kevin Kimbell, BEP, in San Antonio, Texas, under the supervision of Clinical Manager Michael Manney, CO. Kimbell recently completed his prosthetic residency there under the supervision of Mark Scott, MS,CPO, FAAOP. Kimbell is a 2002 graduate of the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center School of Allied Health Sciences.
