NCOPE Accredits OSU-Okmulgee Program

OSU-Okmulgee Orthotics and Prosthetics Program Instructors Imelda Pena, LO, CPed; and Leo Beery, BOCP, were elated that the program has been granted NCOPE/CAAHEP accreditation. The National Commission on Orthotic and Prosthetic Education (NCOPE) officially accredited Oklahoma State University-Okmulgee's Orthotics & Prosthetics Technology Program in late December 2003.

"We are very pleased that the program has obtained this accreditation," said OSU-Okmulgee Health & Environmental Technologies Division Chair Jerry Wilson. "We enrolled 14 students in the O&P Program in the fall of 2001, and we have been fulfilling requirements in the accreditation process since then." The program currently has 39 students enrolled for the fal/2004 semester and has increased its facility space by about 4,000 sq. ft. to a total of about 7,000 sq. ft., he added.

"A needs assessment involving health-related issues revealed that there were very few O&P programs in the US and none that offer associate-level degrees for O&P Registered Associates," explained Wilson. "Research concluded that existing educational programs did not adequately meet the need for O&P services required due to the escalating number of disabling health conditions that cause limb loss."

OSU-Okmulgee O&P Program Director Imelda Pena, a state-licensed orthotist., said competencies in the program's curriculum are broad-based. "Heavy emphasis is given to assessment, technique, patient management, practice management ,and professional responsibility," she noted. NCOPE establishes, maintains, and promotes appropriate standards of quality for educational programs in orthotics and prosthetics and provides recognition for programs that meet or exceed its minimum standards. NCOPE is sanctioned by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP).
